A Deer Caught in the Headlights

Speaking of Santa’s reindeer…

“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.” – Romans 8:13 (NIV)

We’ve all had those days as hormonal men where it just feels like we’re in a battle being pulled in two different directions, right? You know the days, men! The days where it feels like we CAN’T win and our lust is at a boiling over point and in the moment we feel like a “deer caught in the headlights” of an oncoming vehicle. Those days we’re CLEARLY thinking with the wrong “head.”

The Bible says that we are actually wrestling against spiritual forces on a daily basis. No wonder there’s such a magnetic pull towards evil and lust-filled desires at times!!

A few years back, Every Man Ministries’ Pastor, Kenny Luck who I greatly respect, called me up out of the blue when I was going through a really rough, depressing seasonal battle and he told me, “Jeremy, there’s a battle going on right now for you between God and evil forces but God’s not going to let you lose.”

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” – Ephesians 6:12

He felt lead by God randomly to give me a call to encourage me. He told me later on that he never does that but it was clear to him that God wanted him to give me a call. I tell you that brought tears to my eyes after receiving that phone call because I was really struggling at the time! It was prophetic, indeed!

Have you recently felt this tug-o-war in your life, too?

Have you ever walked by “that girl” and even the slightest sight of her skin is enough to activate your lusts, drive you crazy, so you go home and fantasize about her later as you “have your way” with her in your mind? Sadly, at some point of life I would guess every man has done that at least once. God forgive us!! True story, I almost missed out on dating the most amazing woman I’ve ever dated because of my prior fantastical mindset that would lead to lust. I was lost along the path, indeed.

Men, the old lifestyle and way of thinking MUST die! There is a battle for our minds going on and we must make a conscious choice to look at life through the mind of Christ, instead of our everyday fleshly minds.”

“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 1:6 (NIV)

Always remember, “Greater is He that is within you than he who is in the world!” – John 4:4

The battle belongs to the Lord and He will complete you somewhere or somehow. He promised us that in His Word.

Moment by moment we must abandon and surrender every ounce of our being to God. We must form better habits so the battle doesn’t seem so insurmountable in the moment.

Men, there is a call for true heroes to arise from the ashes of our society. We were made for Christ’s royalty, not just to exist as “common, run of the mill, every day, ordinary men of the world.” Why do we so often act this way and trample on our God-given inheritance as Christ’s royal sons?!

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” – 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Men, choose to be heroic and God’s blessings will follow your obedience and sacrifice of dying to yourself and your flesh’s desires. Keep going and receive the life of peace, joy, victory, and purpose you’ve always wanted. It’s there for your taking! It’s quite possible that you’ve been looking to do things the world’s way to find happiness and fulfillment but it’s only left you feeling more empty and lost, wanting to escape your life, even if just for the moment? …Saaaaay, like the weekend, maybe?

I wonder how often we as men have escaped to porn, food, Vegas, watching sports, TV, drinking, drugs, and/or sex to escape the emptiness we feel inside, void of God’s love in a personal daily relationship with Him? You know, we wouldn’t need to “escape” our lives on the weekends if we were more in tune with God and embracing our personal relationship with Him “on the daily.”

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” – Philippians 1:21 (NIV)

I’ll just say it, if you NEED that stuff to feel alive then you’re not spending enough time with only Source who is ENOUGH & the “Almighty High!” I did this for far too long but now I can see the truth. In the moment, I was blind as a deer in the headlights of a semi-tractor to the bigger picture of why I was really doing what I did and Who I was really seeking in my escape to fun and fantasy. I was desperate for God and looking in many of the wrong places, oblivious to what the choices I was making at that time period were really saying about me! I was running to a false sense of freedom! Can you relate to this? Men, it’s time to turn to the Source of our strength and freedom, Jesus!

It’s never too late to start over and let God meet you where you’re at today.

Sincerely, with All of God’s Love for You,

Jeremy D. Pestor
